Application Process & Interviews at Australian Bureau Of Statistics (ABS)

Similar to other graduate processes but a bit quicker. The questions asked were also more technical and relevant to the future job role.

Lots of testing and an interview

Online application, video interview, face-to-face interview, reference check. Process was relatively quick, standard process.

Web assessment, then video interview, finally personal interview.

Initially there was an online application together with simple research questions. This was followed by an online automated interview, then a face to face interview.

In 2015 the interview process was as follows; - Submit application - Successful applicants complete a recorded interview - Successful recorded interviews complete a face-to-face interview with a panel of 3 ABS staff and a scribe. The materials were given 15 minutes prior and gave a chance to prepare for what questions may be asked during the interview.

There was an online test, online interview then a face to face panel interview. I felt like there was less pressure throughout the process as I was given warning and about what was coming and tips for preparation.

Technical questions mainly, as well as why I wanted to join the company.

Behavioural type questions as well as technical statistics question. The technical question involved discussing the trend in wage prices and possible drivers.

Some technical and workplace culture-fit related questions

I can't really remember well. There was one question about the importance of workplace diversity.

Technical skills regarding statistical analysis, and soft skills like leadership, creativity, etc.

Standard questions about yourself and why you would want to work at the organisation

How do I adapt to change? - we are in the midst of massive organisational transformations. We discussed the ABS values and topics such as diversity. There was also a basic technical question. However, you were provided the question 30 minutes prior to the interview so you had time to think it through.

Questions included information on past experience, skills and technical questions related to the job itself.

Behavioural questions about my previous experiences and demonstrated abilities and a series of technical questions related to interpreting data and understanding macroeconomic issues

A mix of situational (provide an example of when you have demonstrated .....) and contextual (from the materials provided, describe how you would/what do you think is the...)

Have some knowledge of the public sector and what the ABS does

Take advantage of reading time to research questions, including using Google. Don't be afraid to ask clarifying questions in your interview and also prepare your own for the interview panel.

research the different departments and areas and be sure to recommend and advertise your interests at the interview to be well placed.

Questions on soft skills can be quite different to what's usually asked, making it harder to prepare. Just be natural.

It is important to know specifically why you want to work for the company, just wanting a job is not enough, you have to believe in the vision and ideals of the organisation you are applying for. Company culture is really important.

Do not be afraid to ask for whatever you require. For example, I was successful in gaining part time employment within the graduate program itself. Also, it's a good idea to revise basic skills specific to the role you are applying for.

Research the organisation, be familiar with the publications and the key roles and responsibilities of the ABS

Don't write yourself off, the ABS takes in a wide range of backgrounds and disciplines. Prepare for the WAY you will answer questions. Don't prepare for specific questions that may not be asked.

Go on the website and have a browse. Be aware of APS and ABS values. Come to the interview with questions you have as well. I was given the impression that my degree was an aspect of the application but they could build my knowledge so don't be turned off by the technical questions etc. Perhaps just be aware of some basics in terms of describing data and trends to make it a little bit easier on yourself.
